A smokey eye look seems complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s a great look that can elevate your evening, and mastering it unlocks even more protentional for a killer makeup look.
Products you need:
- A concealer or primer
- An eyeshadow brush
- Eyeshadow palette
- Eyeliner
- Mascara
The Prep
Step 1: Prime. Before you start applying any color to your lids make sure the eye area is prepped and primed. If you skip this step you may have to deal with shadow fallout and smudges later in the day. You can either use a primer like this one or a concealer.
The Base
Step 1: Apply your first color all over the lid. The color should be a mid-tone which will work as an all-over eyeshadow shade like brown, gray, navy, green, or mauve.
Step 2: Next will be using a color one shade darker than your all-over shade, this is your mid color. This step will mimic a ‘C’ shape and will add dimension to your look. Apply the color halfway down the lash line, then out near the corner, and then up and back into the crease. Then using the same brush, gently apply color to the lower lash line, and then smudge it out to create a smokey finish. Make sure to blend the look very well so the eyeshadows aren’t creating any harsh lines.
Step 3: Using a color darker than your mid color, apply it along the very edge of the lashes and across the outer corner of the eye.
Step 4: Apply a liner along the lash line if you want. This can be done with either an eyeliner pencil or liquid eyeliner and this can make your look more dramatic. Draw a line across the top of your lash line ending at the outer corner of your eye. Using a soft brush blend your liner out and the rest of the three eyeshadow colors until there are no longer harsh defined lines.
Step 5: Apply mascara. Wiggle your brush between your lashes to help define them. A good rule of thumb is to apply two to three coats to avoid clumping. Amp it up by applying a coat to your bottom lashes as well.
Step 6: Clean up any fall out from the eyeshadow by using a clean makeup brush to sweep it off.
The Brows
Whether you want your eyes to be their own statement or you want your brows to complement them this step is optional and totally up to you. You can do your brows by using either use a pomade, a pencil, or a gel.
