Routines are proven to be beneficial for us, but sometimes doing the same thing over and over again can negatively impact us. As much as routines are important, sometimes it’s nice to do something unexpected every once in a while. Like instead of going straight to bed after a shower, maybe you take some time afterward to have a spa night. Maybe take some time to read that book you’ve been putting off? Or give yourself time to meditate? Little moments like that are sure to improve your mood without throwing off your rhythm. Doing something new every once in a while doesn’t hurt and it may help you long-term.
Listen to something
New music has been known to challenge the brain, and also allows us to explore something we haven’t before. Or if you always listen to music first thing in the morning and your aching for something new, consider a podcast or an audiobook. You never know what you may learn.
Read something new
Maybe during your lunch break or before bed, you are constantly logging onto Instagram and reading what’s new with your favorite bloggers or seeing what’s popular on Reddit. Try something new like reading Apple News or subscribing to the Skimm newsletter so you can get bite-sized chunks of what’s going on in the world every morning. A new source of information can help you see things from different perspectives and you may discover something new that you didn’t know before.
Change up your scenery
it seems like more than ever we are constantly looking at screens. If you’re cooped up inside, make sure you go outside for at least 15 minutes. It doesn’t have to be a wild adventure, simply stepping out onto your patio, your front or back yard can prove wonders for your state of being. Due to covid make sure you are away from large crowds, maintain at least 6 feet of space, and wear a mask, and research what your state or country regulations are.
Engage in a hobby
This doesn’t have to be something that breaks the bank. Hobbies are anything that is done in your free time for pleasure, and we mean pleasure-only. They’re even proven to make you happier and act as a mental escape. This is your chance to do something guilt-free, not everything needs to be monetized. Doodling in a plain journal, cutting up old newspapers and magazines, and collaging, playing a video game on your phone are all types of low-key hobbies.
