Before, you add colorful pieces to your wardrobe, it’s important to understand your personal style. Not all colors look good on everyone, which is why you’ll see some people who look amazing in bright colors, and others who look washed out. Knowing what colors make you look most vibrant will help you choose the right color to start with when introducing color into your wardrobe.
Once you understand your personal style, it’s time to start thinking about the colors that work best for you. If you don’t know where to begin, try looking at your skin tone and eye color as a guide and branch out from there. Your natural hair color can also help determine what colors will look best on you.
If your skin tone falls between ivory and beige with yellow undertones, some failsafe colors would be white, cream, tan, gold, brown, and navy blue. If your skin tone is ivory and beige with pink undertones, consider colors like blush pink, light blue, or pastels in general.
If your skin tone is a medium beige or tan color with golden tones, try rich colors like orange, coral red, or gold. If your skintone is medium to tan and you have pink undertones, try colors like red, pink or blue.
Of course, don’t let these colors limit you. Once you find the colors you’re comfortable with, start branching out to incorporate bolder colors. For example, if you mostly wear red and want something new, try a Fuchsia, emerald, or hot pink or consider other looks.
Here are some tips for how to start introducing color to your wardrobe:
1. Start small.
Adding a colorful accessory or two is an easy and inexpensive way to experiment with color. Pick up a colorful bag, belt, or scarf, then take it from there.

2. Don’t rush into buying anything that’s not your style.
If you’re not comfortable in bright colors, don’t buy that green blouse because it’s the “in” thing right now. It won’t look right on you, and you may never wear it.
3. Build your collection gradually.
Start by adding one or two pieces at a time and mix them in with your neutrals. You can also opt for neutral-colored clothes with colorful accents — like a subtle flower print or brightly colored buttons or trim — as an easy way to work some color into your wardrobe.
Like any good wardrobe, yours should be built in layers and it should be something that you love. This may even inspire you to create your very own capsule wardrobe. Don’t know where to start? Follow this guide here.
