What exactly are delicates?
Lingerie, underwear, sweaters or anything that requires a light touch or a hand wash would be considered a delicate. Materials like silk, polyester, lace, fine knit, chiffon and other lightweight materials are also considered delicate and need TLC to have them looking like new.
Mistake #1: Not setting the appropriate cycle
When it comes to delicates, hand washing is commonly the best option, but if you’re in a crunch washing it in a machine can get the job done. However, washing on the appropriate cycle is a must. Washing any delicate on a permanent press will decrease the lifespan of your clothing, and you may see rips and tears sooner than you thought. Permanent press is more gentle than the regular cycle on a machine, but the best bet is to wash your delicates on a gentle cycle with cold water.
Mistake #2: Not using a mesh bag
For some items like sweaters you’re okay to forgo a mesh bag, but with your bras, underwear and lingerie alike you should consider using a mesh bag.
Mistake #3: Using hot water
Constantly using hot water when washing your delicates can cause colors to run and fade, shrink your clothes and the constant heat can break down the fabrics fibers ruining your favorite piece. Opt for cold water when it comes to washing your clothing.
Mistake #4 Drying on high heat
Similar to washing with hot water, drying your delicates on very high heat can shrink, fade and wear down your clothing. If you have the line dry your clothes or lay them flat on a clean surface or on a towel. If you’re in a pinch you can dry your delicates in the dryer on a very low heat. Make sure you pay attention to the care label instructions.
Mistake #5: Ignoring the “Dry Clean Only” Label
If you ever noticed that some labels have “dry clean” or “dry clean only”, there’s a reason for that. When a label specifies that it should be “dry clean only” then you should take it to the pros. However, with “dry clean” you can get away washing it at home, either by handwashing or in the washing machine.
